History of
SPENCER LODGE NO. 543
Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons
1905-2002
The year 1905 was a historical year for the small Town of Spencer, North Carolina. It was in that year that a few good citizens of the community banded themselves together to organize a Masonic Lodge. Spencer was still in the small town class, only nine years of age. Most any citizen a person would meet and ask "from whence came you" the answer would be, "from another locality." Twenty-one citizens organized Spencer Lodge No. 543, A. F. & A. M. Spencer Lodge secured and worked under a dispensation, granted by the Grand Lodge of North Carolina, November 13,1905, with Fulton Lodge No. 99 acting as the mother lodge. The first Mason to be raised by Spencer Lodge was W. C. Feamster, which was done for and as an inspection of Fulton Lodge.
Spencer Masonic Lodge received its charter on January 10,1906. The first application received and accepted came from R. C. Bell, on February 26, 1906. He was the first member mason raised by Spencer Lodge. George C. Kenny was the first Mason to be initiated, when on December 18, 1905 the initiation took place. The Town of Spencer was also incorporated in the year 1905.
